Sam Elliott westerns

Theatrical westerns

  • The Way West (1967): uncredited, a Missouri townsman.
  • Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969): Card Player #2, a tiny part.
  • Molly and Lawless John (1972): Johnny Lawler. The page lists it as both a film and a TV film.
  • Tombstone (1993): Virgil Earp.
  • The Hi-Lo Country (1998): Jim Ed Love, a post-WWII ranching western.

TV movies and miniseries

  • I Will Fight No More Forever (1975): Captain Wood.
  • The Sacketts (1979): Tell Sackett.
  • Wild Times (1980): Hugh Cardiff, 2 episodes.
  • The Shadow Riders (1982): Dal Traven.
  • Gone to Texas (1987): Sam Houston. He was also a producer.
  • The Quick and the Dead (1987): Con Vallian. This is the Louis L’Amour TV film, not the 1995 Sharon Stone film.
  • Conagher (1991): Conn Conagher. He was also writer and producer, and got a Golden Globe nomination for it.
  • The Desperate Trail (1994): Bill Speakes.
  • The Ranger, the Cook and a Hole in the Sky (1995): Bill Bell.
  • Buffalo Girls (1995): Wild Bill Hickok, the role behind his second Golden Globe nomination.
  • You Know My Name (1999): Bill Tilghman. He was also a producer.

TV series

  • Lancer (1969–70): 3 episodes, in different roles.
  • Gunsmoke (1972): one episode, “The Wedding,” as Cory Soames.
  • 1883 (2021–22): Shea Brennan, a main role.

Borderline, depending on how strictly you define “western”

  • Rough Riders (1997): Captain “Bucky” O’Neill. It’s a Spanish-American War miniseries, but he plays an Arizona lawman.
  • Blue River (1995): Henry Howland. The page lists it twice, as a film and a TV film, and doesn’t give the genre.
  • The Yellow Rose (1982): Chance McKenzie. It’s a modern-day Texas ranch drama series.
  • Ghost Rider (2007): Carter Slade / Phantom Rider. It’s a superhero film with a western-flavored backstory.
  • Texarkana (1998): a TV film with his role listed as “N/A.” I can’t tell the genre or role from this page.
